Positive Spielberg Test for Morbidelli and Márquez

Published: 14 Aug 2017

Just one day after finishing one-two in the Austrian Grand Prix, Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS riders, Franco Morbidelli and Álex Márquez, were back on track at Spielberg today for an official Moto2 test.

For race winner Morbidelli the focus of the one-day test was on evaluating upgraded front forks from the team's suspension partner Öhlins. The Italian also tested revised chassis settings on his Kalex Moto2 machine as well as a new rear tyre from Dunlop. Morbidelli had a minor tumble at T10 during the second session, but remounted to return to the pit box.

Márquez and his crew also worked to optimise chassis set up, specifically to improve the feeling with the front in the heavy braking areas that are such a feature of the Spielberg circuit. Like his Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS teammate, the 21-year-old Spaniard also provided feedback to Dunlop on the new rear tyre.

The Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS duo will return to action in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 11 days time. Morbidelli heads to the United Kingdom determined to extend his 26-point lead over Tom Lüthi in the championship standings, while Márquez heads across the English Channel equally determined to close the gap to his Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS teammate.

Franco Morbidelli:
"Today we mostly worked on bike set up, fine tuning the base set up we have to get even more from the bike. We're winning races but I'm not always the fastest and there is always something to improve. We've tried quite a few different things today, including revised front forks, and the feeling has been good. We also tested a new rear tyre from Dunlop, but I think we need more laps on this at a few different circuits before coming to any conclusions. Overall a good test for us and now we can enjoy a few days off before heading to Silverstone for the next race."

Álex Márquez:
"We tested a few different options with the chassis set up as well as some changes to the geometry, mainly to improve the feedback from the front in the hard braking areas here. Not big changes, because I was happy with the set up I had in yesterday's race, but just a few small things that we thought might bring an additional tenth or two. I'm happy with the progress we've made today; we found a few small improvements but we also confirmed that the race set up we went with yesterday was definitely the right one. Now we need to look forward to the next race in Silverstone, which is another of my favourite tracks."
