Team Marc VDS rider Mike Di Meglio made a successful start to the exciting new electric bike era by powering to a top three finish in the first official FIM Enel MotoE World Cup test in Jerez
Frenchman Mike Di Meglio and Team Marc VDS made a flying start to the preparations for the inaugural FIM Enel MotoE World Cup at the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto this weekend.
Mike Di Meglio wasted no time in adapting to the innovative Energica Ego Corse machine in both dry and wet conditions, and a fastest time of 1’50.741 meant only Bradley Smith and Niki Tuuli were able to lap the 4.4km Andalusia venue faster than the former 125cc World Champion.
Di Meglio showed great promise and potential in varying conditions throughout the test and a lap of 1’52.160 on the final afternoon meant the 30-year-old was fastest on the last day ahead of current MotoGP rider Smith.
While wet conditions may have restricted Di Meglio’s time on track, the Jerez test was still a very valuable data-gathering experience for Team Marc VDS, who will make history in 2019 when it races in the new FIM Enel MotoE World Cup over five rounds next season.
Di Meglio and Team Marc VDS will continue their preparations for the MotoE World Cup back in Jerez for another three-day test that commences on March 13.
Mike Di Meglio: 3º, 1:50.741, +0.476
“We couldn’t have asked for a better way to start this new chapter”
“I am very happy with how this test has gone. We have been able to draw some very positive conclusions from the three days even if the weather was not perfect. We improved a lot in wet conditions today compared to yesterday and in both dry and wet we have started to get a very good understanding of what we need to find the right balance for the bike. In mixed conditions on the final afternoon I set the fastest time and this is very encouraging. We made some good steps with the set-up of the bike and improved each time we made a modification. The feeling of the Energica Ego Corsa machine is something very different to what I am used to but I have enjoyed this first experience a lot. I was in the top three in all conditions on all days and we couldn’t have really asked for a better way to start this new chapter for the World Championship.”
